I had to wait until my nephew came along before I had an excuse to get reacquainted.<br /><br />As for setting the bed on fire, I wish I could put it down to smoking in bed, which would at least show some curiosity or maybe youthful rebellion on my part, or pyromania or pyrokinesis even, which would make for a better story, but it was down to simple stupidity (as, thinking about it, were most of the other brushes with death I mentioned). I was young (I'll guess five or six, but I could be wrong; definitely one of those single figure ages) and I was on my own, sitting in bed, a reading lamp behind me. Anyway, at some point or other, I reached behind the reading lamp to grab a book, or maybe I was just going to switch the lamp off (not totally sure, I didn't realise at the time this would be worth recounting decades later, so wasn't paying much attention). Anyway, somehow I managed to knock the lamp over onto the bed, the lightbulb broke open, flames suddenly appeared. Realising this wasn't a good thing, I think I threw some covers over the flames, presumably unplugged the lamp, and no doubt thinking I'd done a brilliant fireman job, I trotted to the room next door and crawled into the unburnt bed there and fell asleep.<br /><br />The next morning, my younger sister had the temerity to wake the whole house up, just because the place was full of smoke (or maybe she could just smell smoke, I can't remember now, and I suspect that I'd have just wanted to go back to sleep regardless of how much smoke there was). Anyway, we got dragged out of bed and deposited outside on the front doorstep, and it turned out the bed was happy smouldering away (although it was easily put out; fortunately it hadn't burst into flames, and fortunately my sister had alerted us in time, otherwise things could have turned out a lot different).<br /><br />Anyway, that's what happened.
